1 Nov 2006 - Penistone Environment Group meeting
This included very interesting talk from Dick Bradford, a speaker from BMBC about renewable energy and Bio-Mass fuels.
BioMass boilers are a very clean way of heating, converting all of the fuel into energy, with the only waste product being CO2. The amount of CO2 produced is only the same as if the tree branches the woodchip is made from were left to rot on the ground. Woodchip is also a very cheap fuel, as it comes from Barnsley's parks and public areas when trees are trimmed back and the only costs are in chipping it.
It is now Barnsley Council's policy to put Bio-Mass boilers in all new buildings, including the new Barnsley Centre developments. They are also steadily replacing the boilers in all existing council-owned buildings with Bio-Mass boilers. They are reaching all their government-set targets on greenhouse gas reduction well ahead of
The planning process in Barnsley now ensures that renewable energy is considered before consent is granted. However, we are going to invite a speaker from the planning department to come and talk to us about how this works in practice - we are particularly interested in the several new housing developments in Penistone and whether these will be 'environmentally friendly'
