2 Jun 2008 - Penistone Friends of the Earth Meeting
This month’s meeting was somewhat dominated by the Carry-a-Bag project in the run up to the big launch day on the 12th July, in which we hope to reduce the plastic bag usage in Penistone and make people think before they take a carrier bag. Lots of bag related things were discussed such as producing the shop local guide, bag making workshops, holding stalls at local fairs, advertising and the bag delivery day.
On other environmental issues an update was provided on the preliminary hydro survey that was undertaken by Penistone FoE last month to establish potential sites for mini-hydro electricity stations along the river Don.
There was also brief discussion (only because we were running out of time!) about bio-fuels and the problems with the EU’s proposed 10% target of sourcing fuel from renewables and how a campaign may evolve to abolish this target.
In addition to these, a few socials were discussed, with an environmental theme. Keep your eye on the calendar for details!
