Local Wind Farms
In principle, Penistone Friends of the Earth group is in favour of Wind Power. It is a clean, safe, renewable, cost efficient way of producing energy. This has to be balanced by the concerns of residents, but we felt that in the case of Hazlehead the benefits outweighed the disadvantages. We were pleased to hear that Banks Developments gained planning permission to site a wind farm at Hazlehead, Crow Edge on 6th March 2007
Here is some information about the plans as we understand them at present:
- The proposed site of the wind turbines is along the road from Millhouse Green to Holmfirth, opposite the turn off to Carlecotes and extending to Crow Edge.
- There would be 3 turbines, each 100m high (including blades). The Royd Moor turbines are 76m high - three quarters of the size of the new proposed ones.
- The proposed 3 turbines would produce an estimated 17000 megawatt hrs per year - enough to power around 3000 homes. This is the same amount as the 13 wind turbines at Royd Moor currently produce. Together they would produce a sizeable proportion of the electricity for our area.

There is opposition to the Wind Farms, from a group called CLOUT; their website has a link from our websites page
There is now another proposal by E.ON UK to site another cluster of Wind Turbines at Blackstone Edge in Crow Edge, near to the existing Royd Moor Wind Farm and the Hazlehead plans above. We will be following these developments in the hope that E.ON can produce plans that will be acceptable to local residents.
Here is some information about the proposals as we understand them at present (from E-ON's flyers):
- The proposed site of the wind turbines is between the Royd Moor turbines and Crow Edge, near Maythorn.
- There would be 3 turbines, each up to 101m high (including blades). The Royd Moor turbines are 76m high - three quarters of the size of the new proposed ones.
- The proposed 3 turbines would have a maximum power output of 2MW - enough to power up to 3800 homes. This is almost the same amount as the 13 wind turbines at Royd Moor currently produce.
