Mottram Tintwistle Bypass

The Mottram / Tintwistle Bypass

This is a scheme to reduce congestion at the Manchester end of the A628. However, it will increase traffic in the Penistone area by a predicted 50% and increase CO2 emissions in South Yorkshire by 22%, as the A628 will then be a much faster route across the Pennines.

This scheme has now been postponedby the DoT, as it is not a government priority at the moment, but a public enquiry will be held next year.
Penistone Environment Group object to this scheme, as it encourages more road traffic in general, and specifically in our area. There has been no consideration of the affects of the bypass on the Penistone side of the Pennines and no measures will be put in to cope with the extra traffic. Sustainable transport options have not been looked into for this scheme.
As a group, we wrote to the Highways agency and Barnsley Council, as well as writing as individuals.

There are several other groups opposing the scheme. In the Websites section is a link to the opposition group in the Mottram/Tintwistle area and also WAIT, the opposition group in the Penistone area.
Below is a document produced by the CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) to explain the objections in more detail and what you can do to help.
