The Big Ask
The Big Ask is a Friends of the Earth campaign to get a Climate Change Bill passed in parliament which will reduce our emissions enough to prevent catastrophic climate change.
At the moment, a draft bill has been drawn up and will soon be debated in parliament. However, Friends of the Earth does not think the Bill goes far enough and has been asking for 3 main amendments:
- That international aviation and shipping be included in the emission reduction targets
- That the targets are annual not 5 year
- That the target reduction in emissions needs to be 80% by 2050 not 60% (on 1990 levels)
Our group, Penistone Friends of the Earth, have been getting involved by writing to the consultation on the Bill and getting postcards signed to send to our MP. We presented the postcards to Mick Clapham MP recently (see News section) and he agreed to support the amendments to the Climate Change Bill - success! Friends of the Earth groups all over the country have been persuading their MPs to back the amendments and we are now hoping there will be enough support for them to be passed by parliament.
