Penistone Friends of the Earth

Welcome to the Penistone Friends of the Earth website.

In December, the group voted run the Penistone Carry-A-Bag project. The aim of this is to reduce the use of plastic bags in Penistone.

    -    Firstly, we will provide every household in the Penistone Area with a free fabric shopping bag, kindly donated by the Co-operative.

    -    We are also helping the traders to find alternatives to plastic bags

    -    We have held a public meeting for traders and shoppers to tell people about the problems and the project in Penistone.

    -    We will be launching the project in the Summer.

    -    For more information about the project, go to our new website Penistone Carry-A-Bag.

Climate Change is huge, and it is hard to know where to start. This is a simple project which everyone can join in with, which will make a real difference to the environment. We hope that for many people, this might be a first step on the road to more environmental action.

Apologies to anyone who has looked at this site recently and seen Father Christmas still on it! We have been so busy with the new Penistone Carry-A-Bag website, this one has got a little neglected.

There are now a few updates, as well as the information above about Penistone Carry-A-Bag:

    -The 'Shop Local' page in 'Climate Change'

    -The Calendar

    -A bit of tweaking all over

Our action plan is:

* To work on the Big Ask campaign which puts pressure on MPs to support amendments to the draft Climate Change Bill (see Climate Change section).
* To have a presence at all local events such as the 'Women's Event', Lord Mayor's Gala, Penistone Show, etc, to give out information and involve people in reducing their carbon emissions
* To sign at least 200 people up to our 'Climate Change Pledge' this year, where they will agree to make changes to their lives to reduce carbon emissions.
* To go into local schools and run competitions and activities to help children understand what they can do about climate change.
* To get information in public places such as the library and community centre
* To issue regular press releases to local papers and radio stations about what we are doing.
* To have one or more members of the group qualify as 'Community Champions' which would mean we could advise local groups on ways to reduce their carbon emissions.
* To link in with any other local carbon-reducing schemes.
Look at our 'Other Projects' page for some projects which we do not manage but which conserve and improve the environment of Penistone and surrounding areas:

* Adopt a Path
* Lapwing watch

Also in 'Other Projects' is information on local Wind Farms and the opposition to the Mottram Tintwistle Bypass.
